Championship: Coventry storm back to beat Baggies, Saints thrash Charlton 5-1

1 week ago 13

Leaders Coventry came from two goals behind to beat 10-man West Brom 3-2 in a thriller at the CBS Arena. Two goals from Aune Heggebø put the visitors ahead, but Josh Eccles halved the deficit before the break. After Jayson Molumby had been sent off four minutes into the second half, Ellis Simms and Victor Torp were on target to make it nine wins in 10 for Coventry.

Molumby had fouled Ephron Mason-Clark in the first half that led to a clash and both players were booked. Molumby then pulled back Torp to prevent a counterattack and was shown a second yellow card on 49 minutes.

It was the second home game in succession Coventry had come from behind to win after beating Sheffield United 3-1 before the international break.

Torp went close to extending the lead when his free-kick was blocked, while Mason-Clark forced an acrobatic save out of Josh Griffiths to keep the deficit to one. Coventry comfortably saw the game out and there was also a welcome return for midfielder Jack Rudoni, who had been sidelined for two months through injury.

Southampton continued their excellent form under interim manager Tonda Eckert as they thrashed Charlton 5-1 at the Valley to complete a miserable day for the former Saints manager Nathan Jones.

Finn Azaz collected a first-half double with Ryan Manning, Adam Armstrong and Casper Jander also scoring in a dream opening 45 minutes for the visitors, who have won all three matches since the German replaced Will Still this month.

The hosts cut the deficit just before the break when Lloyd Jones headed in Sonny Carey’s deep corner. Jones, facing his former club for the first time since they sacked him after a 95-day spell in charge in February 2023, was the subject of taunts from the travelling fans.

First-half goals from Rob Dickie and Emil Riis set Bristol City on course for an emphatic 3-0 victory over Swansea at Ashton Gate. Dickie headed the home side in front from Anis Mehmeti’s fourth-minute corner to the near post and Riis doubled the advantage with a far-post volley from another Mehmeti cross on 31 minutes.

Substitute Yu Hirakawa broke clear through the middle to complete the scoring with a low right-foot shot on 82 minutes, leaving Swansea, watched by their incoming new manager, Vítor Matos, with nothing to show for a spirited display.

On Friday, Andri Gudjohnsen’s fourth goal in five games earned Blackburn a 2-1 win at Preston and denied their Lancashire rivals a chance of going second. Although Alfie Devine cancelled out Lewis Miller’s opener within seconds in a frantic finish to the first half, Blackburn were the better side after the break and Gudjohnsen’s 62nd-minute header extended Rovers’ unbeaten run at Deepdale that dates back to 2019.
