Jimmy Anderson went unsold in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction on Monday, while Indian teenager Vaibhav Suryavanshi made history by becoming the youngest player ever to secure a deal.
Suryavanshi was sold for 11m rupees (around £104,000) to the Rajasthan Royals, who are coached by the former India captain Rahul Dravid. The 13-year-old – who was born in March 2011, during India’s winning 50-over World Cup campaign – made headlines recently when he smashed a 58-ball hundred for India Under-19s against Australia U19s in an unofficial Test match in Chennai.
Anderson was available for around £10,000 more than Suryavanshi, but none of the 10 teams in the world’s most lucrative domestic cricket competition were tempted by England’s all-time leading Test wicket-taker. The 42-year-old, who retired from Test cricket in July, has not played a Twenty20 game in a decade.
England white-ball batter Will Jacks was bought by Mumbai Indians for £500,000, while all-rounder Sam Curran returned to Chennai Super Kings in a £230,000 deal. Jacob Bethell was signed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru for £246,000, joining Phil Salt and Liam Livingstone at the franchise after they were bought on Sunday.
Fast bowler Brydon Carse went to Sunrisers Hyderabad for £95,000, while all-rounder Jamie Overton joined Curran at Super Kings after being acquired for £143,000. All-rounder Moeen Ali was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for £189,000, but Jonny Bairstow, Adil Rashid, Ben Duckett, Gus Atkinson, Olly Stone and Chris Jordan all went unsold on the last day of bidding in Saudi Arabia.
In the opening day of bidding on Sunday, IPL-winning captain Shreyas Iyer was sold to Punjab Kings for a record £2.51m. The former Kolkata Knight Rider did not hold the record for long, with Lucknow Super Giants paying £2.54m to sign India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant just minutes later.
The England white-ball captain Jos Buttler was bought by Gujarat Titans for £1.4m, while Bengaluru paid a combined £1.8m for Salt and Livingstone. Jofra Archer, who was only added to the auction list on Thursday, was bought by Rajasthan Royals for £1.4m and Harry Brook signed for Delhi Capitals for a £590,000 price tag.
Australian left-armer Mitchell Starc, who last year became the IPL’s most expensive player, went to Delhi Capitals for £1m, down from the £2.3m Kolkata paid 12 months ago. Josh Hazlewood joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru for £1.2m, but IPL stalwart David Warner went unsold in Monday’s accelerated final round of bidding.
The 2025 Indian Premier League season will begin on 14 March, with the final scheduled to take place on 25 May.
