The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

When Rachel Joyce’s bestseller about a retiree’s road trip was turned into a 2023 film, it had a couple of lovely numbers by Sam Lee. Earlier this year, fellow folkie Passenger (AKA Michael David Rosenberg) provided the music and lyrics for Chichester Festival theatre’s production, which transfers to the West End in January. Passenger’s album of renditions of the songs, One for the Road – with a few tracks that didn’t make the musical and an appearance from Jack Wolfe, who played the show’s Balladeer – is available to stream now.

Aurélie Dupont: Instants of Grace

French film-maker Cédric Klapisch is best known for his often romantic comedies – but he also has a passion for dance. His 2022 drama En Corps starred ballerina Marion Barbeau, whose mentor Aurélie Dupont, the étoile turned director of dance at Paris Opera, is profiled (with stunning performance clips) in Klapisch’s 2010 documentary, now on MarqueeTV.

The Estate

A blistering turn from Adeel Akhtar powers Shaan Sahota’s 2025 political drama, which comes to National Theatre at Home on 12 November. That night, to mark Captioning Awareness Week and 25 years of the deaf-led charity Stagetext, there’s a subtitled online event with a live chat for viewers. BSL-interpreted, audio-described and noncaptioned versions of the play are available.

Art Flicks

Between the Lines

A YA novel co-written by Jodi Picoult and her teenage daughter was the source for this high school musical, which blurs the upheavals of adolescence with a fantastical adventure based on its heroine’s favourite novel. Staged in New York in 2022, it’s on BroadwayHD.

Fugaces

“La Capitana” was the nickname earned by the flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya, who became a sensation in the late 1930s. The choreographer and dancer Aina Alegre pays tribute to her with this performance, filmed at the Lyon Dance Biennale earlier this year (streaming on Arte.tv).
