Born in Northern Ireland, Bear Grylls, 51, served as a soldier in the 21 SAS regiment and went on to star in adventure series, including seven seasons of Discovery Channel’s Man vs Wild. Other shows are Running Wild With Bear Grylls, the Emmy award-winning You vs Wild, and Bafta-winning The Island With Bear Grylls. His new series, Wild Reckoning, starts on BBC One next month. He is married with three sons and lives in London, north Wales and Switzerland.
What is your greatest fear?
Small things make me anxious – like social things – but I have no big fears because I have faith in my heart.
Which living person do you most admire and why?
I love and admire Julia Roberts, one of our Running Wild guests, for the way she has a few close friends, is loyal to her family, doesn’t believe in all the fame stuff and can laugh at herself.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Too controlling about silly things like timings or not having toxic cleaning products in the house.
What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Caring too much about what others think.
What was your most embarrassing moment?
Holding the hand of some random lady at an airport who I mistook for my wife, Shara.
Aside from a property, what’s the most expensive thing you’ve bought?
An apocalypse escape vessel – a steel hull ice-capable sailing boat for all the family that has almost zero electronics and is manual operation throughout – armed with an array of weaponry.
What is your most treasured possession?
My old SAS beret that I keep on my shelf for when I need some of that “Who Dares Wins” spirit.

Recognising good and courageous hearts in unsung people.
If you could bring something extinct back to life, what would you choose?
My late dad.

Tarzan.

Picking my toenails and occasionally eating them.

Princess of Wales.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A soldier and adventure guy.

Why is your nose so wonky?

A mix maybe.

Early night and TV in bed with Shara.

Light of the Almighty in my heart.

Where do I begin? There have been a lot.

Police caution from the Civil Aviation Authority for illegal Base jumping.

He knew where life was to be found.

It’s all a gift. So be grateful for every day.

We finally get to be with Jesus, face to face.
